Background Information:
Since 2016, a community of citizens organized as Adams Morgan for Reasonable Development (AM4RD, http://www.admoplaza.com), has been working together to stop Truist Bank (formerly SunTrust) which owns the property at the southwest corner of 18th St & Columbia Rd NW, 1800 Columbia Rd NW, from destroying and redeveloping the 4000 square foot public plaza there into a luxury condo building. Though the bank filed for demolition permits in 2017, we have succeeded in preventing the razing of the site to date through both litigation and advocacy, hosted dozens of events at the Plaza, and come together to support the unhoused who have found refuge there during Covid. We are presently seeking the settlement of the present litigation, the recording of a public use easement on the deed of 1800 Columbia Rd NW, and the city to purchase the site to save and renew the Plaza and for a library and community center.
